She was always sweetly welcoming, though any interruption must have cut in on that time she so wanted; for Aunt Emily was busy, always busy. When she read, she was next busiest to when she wrote. There was much talk of following one’s own star wherever it led, howbeit Puritan blood held them back when it came to setting forth. The expression and effect of all this must have been in her mind, though it could hardly be held in the least responsible for her refusal to compromise with her own jealous genius.
